Evacuations ordered for fire burning in rural area of Yolo County

Fire officials are working with deputies to determine evacuation needs as the firefight continues.

ZAMORA, Calif. — Crews are battling a wildfire in the hills of Zamora in Yolo County.

According to the Yolo County Sheriff Office's, the fire is burning in a very rural area with few homes, in the area of Road 12A and I-505. The affected homes were notified, or are in the process of being notified, about the fire. 

Officials have called for evacuations from I-505 to County Road 90 and County Road 14 to County Road 16.

According to Zamora Fire Protection District Fire Chief Chase Covington, the fire is 65% contained and burned at least 100 acres.

WILDFIRE PREPS

If you live in a wildfire-prone zone, Cal Fire suggests creating a defensible space around your home. Defensible space is an area around a building in which vegetation and other debris are completely cleared. At least 100 feet is recommended.

The Department of Homeland Security suggests assembling an emergency kit that has important documents, N95 respirator masks, and supplies to grab with you if you’re forced to leave at a moment’s notice. The agency also suggests signing up for local warning system notifications and knowing your community’s evacuation plans best to prepare yourself and your family in cases of wildfires.
