CALAVERAS COUNTY, Calif. — A tortoise was found Tuesday as fire crews battled the Maria Fire in Calaveras County.
According to Cal Fire, Madera-Mariposa-Merced Unit Fire Prevention Specialist Jaime Williams found a tortoise along Highway 49 near the New Melones Bridge. Cal Fire said the tortoise was very hungry and ate two apples, a bunch of spinach, half a pound of strawberries and some carrots.
"He is being spoiled, cared for and safe until we can locate his owners," Cal Fire wrote in a Facebook post.

The Maria Fire is burning in Calaveras County and is 71 acres and 45% contained as of Thursday. It started on July 23 around midnight.
