OROVILLE, Calif. — Oroville canceled its Fourth of July Fireworks Celebration event due to the Thompson Fire which forced thousands of residents to evacuate Tuesday.
The fireworks show is put together with donations to the Oroville Chamber of Commerce. Officials say those funds will be used for a community firework show at a “later and safer date.”
Due to the fire's proximity to the Oroville Dam and Lake Oroville, all state recreation areas are temporarily closed to allow officials to focus on battling the fire. California State Parks says the areas will stay closed until Friday at the earliest.
The North Forebay Day Use Area where the fireworks were being planned is closed and instead being used to coordinate statewide agencies assisting on the fire.
The Burma Day Use Area and several miles of the Brad Freeman and Dan Beebe trails in the Diversion Pool and Lakeland areas are closed and in need of repair before being reopened again, according to California State Parks.
Camping reservations are canceled through July 4 but may be extended, officials say.
