Some Park Fire evacuees return home: 'You see the devastation. It’s just heartbreaking'

Some evacuees say it will take time and neighbors pulling together to get through it all.

BUTTE COUNTY, Calif. — Some Park Fire evacuees are going back home as evacuation orders get lifted in parts of Butte County. That includes the south side of the town of Cohasset, which was devastated by the fire.

Some families are returning to good news, but for others, it will be a different story. The Park Fire destroyed hundreds of buildings in Butte County, at least 310.

Lifelong Cohasset resident Clint Charmley wasn't able to believe his luck after learning his home survived the fire. But he knows many of his neighbors weren't as fortunate.

"I’ve got a lot of survivor’s remorse. You see the devastation. It’s just heartbreaking," Charmley said.

Mark Chang is another evacuee who just came home for the first time. One of two homes on his property was a total loss, but his primary home survived.

"Like a miracle. I was like, 'What? It’s still there?' Chang said.

With all of the devastation from the fire, both men said it will take time and neighbors pulling together to get through it all.

"People out here look after each other," Chang said.
