PG&E could turn off power to parts of 17 counties on election night

PG&E said only one polling location, Calpine Geothermal Visitor Center in Lake County, was in the scope of the shutoffs.

CALIFORNIA, USA — Gusty winds and wildfire conditions could have PG&E turning off power to parts of 17 counties on election night.

In total, the potential power outage could impact about 15,000 customers in 17 counties and three tribal areas. The first outage would start at 7 p.m. at the earliest if conditions don't improve.

While the Public Safety Power Shutoff could happen on election night, PG&E said only one polling location, Calpine Geothermal Visitor Center in Lake County, was in the scope of the power shutoffs. The earliest it could be impacted is Tuesday around 9:30 p.m., according to PG&E.

While the potential impact falls past the time for in-person voting, PG&E is still trying to make sure there is backup power available at the site.

No tabulation centers are in the scope of the power shutoffs.

People in the impacted areas will get a notice from the utility to help them prepare for the outages.

The counties that could potentially be impacted include:

  • Alameda
  • Butte
  • Colusa
  • Contra Costa
  • Glenn
  • Kern
  • Lake
  • Mendocino
  • Napa
  • Plumas
  • Santa Clara
  • Santa Cruz
  • Solano
  • Sonoma
