SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A fire at the Sacramento Railyards was the sixth grass fire brought under control by fire crews Monday.
According to the Sacramento Fire Department, the Railyards fire was off Bercut Drive, between Interstate 5 and Jibboom Street. Fire Captain Justin Sylvia said the fire had the potential to threaten Old Sacramento, so they took an aggressive approach in getting it under control.
"This was a small fire that quickly grew with these winds and had a structure threat over to the Railyards behind us," said Sylvia.
No one was hurt and no buildings were damaged. It's not clear what caused the fire.
Crews also responded to a blaze on one side of Interstate 80, near Northgate Boulevard, that jumped eight lanes of traffic due to an ember carried by the wind.
"That just goes to show you that just these ember casts can start spot fires from eight lanes of traffic away. So, very dangerous," said Sylvia.
The fire has since been brought under control.
In total, as of 6:15 p.m., crews responded to six grass fires and one house fire so far. It all comes as crews deal with Red Flag conditions.
"There's multiple reasons that could have sparked this. But with these high winds that we're experiencing, any little spark can start these fires and they quickly grow with this wind," said Sylvia.
