Arson suspect arrested in connection to Thompson Fire

The fire was sparked in early July 2024 and grew to nearly 4,000 acres.

BUTTE COUNTY, Calif. — Cal Fire says an arson suspect has been arrested in connection to the Thompson Fire that sparked in Butte County this past July. 

Fire officials say 26-year-old Spencer Grant Anderson of Oroville was arrested in Chico for allegedly starting the fire. According to a press release from Cal Fire, officials knew within the first 24 hours that the fire was started "due to an act of arson and identified a suspect."

The Thompson Fire grew to almost 4,000 acres, destroyed 13 homes and caused thousands to leave their home due to mandatory evacuation orders. 

Anderson is currently in the Butte County Jail and is expected to be in court on Aug. 26.
