GRASS VALLEY, Calif. — A Grass Valley woman was hospitalized Monday after being shot multiple times, and the suspect is dead by a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

According to the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office, it unfolded around 3 p.m. Monday at a home on Conifer Lane.

One of the 911 callers reported needing medical help for a gunshot wound to the neck. She was taken to the hospital by ambulance.

The victim told deputies the suspect was last seen in the home along with two additional family members, including a child.

The woman and child were able to get out of the home, but deputies couldn’t reach the suspect, who was believed to be inside and armed.

A standoff began and investigators got a search warrant and later used drones to inspect the house. The drone found one person down and unresponsive in the home.

Investigators entered the home and found the suspect, 62-year-old David Peter Weiss, of Grass Valley, with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead around 7 p.m.

The sheriff’s office says the victim, a 65-year-old woman, was shot multiple times in her neck, face and back. She is in stable condition.
