Woodland boxing program expands after fight to keep it open

A Woodland Boxing program was recently relocated and expanded to the Woodland Community & Senior Center.

Over the last 25 years, the boxing club has served hundreds, possibly thousands of residents, many of them children in need according to officials.

"It (the boxing club) means everything to me," said Christopher Rodriguez. "I want make a career out of this."

The Woodland Boxing Club was in jeopardy of shutting down. The city started looking for relocation options in the summer of 2016. Coach Ricardo Carrillo said the conditions of the old facility were unbearable and the location was scary.

Council member Angel Barajas said this boxing club has been a political debate for 10 to 15 years.

"There was a lot of pushback because there are space issues that some individuals in the community did not want these youths to be here," Barajas said. "It was a political issue."

However, they won. The boxing club moved to the Woodland Community and Senior Center.

"It's huge," said Kevin Tretter, a parent. "It's one of those things as a large family it becomes extremely expensive to have kids engaged in athletics."
