'Truly magical': 100-year-old Yuba City man meets pony, fulfills lifelong Christmas wish

"I wrote a letter to Santa Claus 90 years ago and never got my pony, but this time I got it," said Burke. "Don't give up hope, keep wishing."

YUBA CITY, Calif. — A recently turned 100-year-old man's lifelong dream of meeting a pony came true Tuesday morning.

Mr. Burke, a resident at Sutter Estates Retirement Community in Yuba City, was the recipient of Blue Zones Project Yuba Sutter to promote happiness and well-being among seniors.

"I wrote a letter to Santa Claus 90 years ago and never got my pony, but this time I got it," said Burke. "Don't give up hope, keep wishing. Santa Claus will eventually come through."

Burke recently celebrated his 100th birthday and has, in the past, expressed his dream of having a pony at Christmas. Cowboy, the pony who visited the seniors, came from Oakdale's Stueve Farms.

Other people and organizations contributed to celebrate the holiday for the residents in the facility including retired teachers, American Legion Post 705 and others to ensure folks on the facility's giving tree got some goods.

"Our team is overwhelmed with gratitude and joy for the incredible support and generosity our community has shown. Together we have accomplished something truly magical," said Blue Zones Project Yuba Sutter in a social media post

Burke says he was so excited as he hadn't pet a horse in a long time. He offers a few words to those still hoping for their Christmas dream: "Don't be surprised if you don't get your wish right away, but keep wishing because it might eventually come true. Santa Claus is busy and he'll take care of everyone he can."
