Man killed in gunfight with Yuba County deputies after 30-minute chase in truck, sheriff says

The man allegedly fired shots from his truck after it became disabled at the end of a chase, then deputies returned fire.

YUBA COUNTY, Calif. — A man was shot and killed late Tuesday night during a gunfight with deputies in Yuba County, leading to road closings early Wednesday morning along Highway 20.

Around 10:30 p.m., a deputy attempted to conduct a traffic stop of a truck on Marysville Road near Shadowbrook Trail in Browns Valley, according to a news release from the Yuba County Sheriff’s Office. The driver allegedly failed to stop and led deputies on a half-hour chase.

The truck reportedly became disabled and stopped near the 2600 block of Highway 20, north of Marysville.

Police said just before 11 p.m., the driver allegedly fired shots from his truck. Multiple deputies then fired back during a gunfight, the sheriff’s office said.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. His identification will be released by the Yuba County Coroner’s Office after his family is notified.

The sheriff’s office said the incident is being investigated by the Yuba-Sutter Officer-Involved-Shooting and Critical Incident Investigation Team, which is led by Yuba and Sutter County district attorneys' offices and other experienced law enforcement officers.

Highway 20 was closed early Wednesday morning in both directions between Hallwood Boulevard and Walnut Avenue. The sheriff’s office is asking drivers to use an alternate route.
