SACRAMENTO, Calif — The man who allegedly shot and killed Sacramento Police Officer Tara O'Sullivan last Wednesday was transferred to the county jail's psychiatry floor after hurting himself, sheriff's officials said.

Adel Sambrano Ramos, 45, apparently slammed his head on a bed frame Sunday morning while under 24-hour observation, according to Sacramento County Sheriff's Sgt. Tess Deterding. Ramos was transported to a hospital for treatment.

Ramos returned to the jail Sunday night and was placed on the psychiatric floor. He's expected to appear in court for the first time Monday afternoon for last week's fatal shooting of a Sacramento officer who was responding to a domestic disturbance call at Ramos' home.

He is being charged with murder, attempted murder and possessing two illegal assault rifles.

Police released body camera footage of the shooting Friday, as well as photos of the rifle allegedly used by Ramos in the fatal shooting. The video shows Officer O'Sullivan and her training officer, Daniel Chipp, taking fire almost immediately after opening the backdoor to Ramos' home.

According to Sacramento County Superior Court records, Ramos has a lengthy criminal record dating back 1995 when he was arrested for driving with a blood alcohol level of more than double the legal limit. In the years following, Ramos was arrested for theft, domestic violence and assault and battery.

Before last week's shooting, Ramos was issued a bench warrant for failing to appear in court after being arrested in November 2018 for assault and battery.
