Man in 'altered state' dies in Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department custody

Rudy Santillan, 36, had a medical emergency after he was taken into custody, according to the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department.

MODESTO, Calif. — A Modesto man, whom the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department described as being in an "altered state," died while he was in custody on July 16.

Sheriff's deputies arrested 36-year-old Rudy Santillan on Imperial Avenue in Modesto.

The sheriff's department said Santillan began to have a medical emergency after he was arrested. Santillan was then transported to Doctors Medical Center where he died.

Department officials said they plan to release the body camera video footage.
