In reality, this phenomenon, known as "firefall," happens when the sun's angle "sets the waterfall ablaze with reds and oranges, like a fire was falling down the cliffs on the shoulder of El Capitan," according to Yosemite National Park.

The phenomenon is usually the most engaging during mid-to-late February.

The Phenomenon! Anyone can take this picture as long as they are at the right place at the right time. This phenomenon occurs for about 10 days in the month of February. There must be enough snow on top of the El Capitan mountain. There must be enough sunlight to melt it and cause flow through Horse Tail falls. There must be a clear sky to the west at sunset. And that is when the rays of the setting sun transform the white water of Horsetail falls to the color of a raging inferno. This is the first time in 5 years that I have been trying to get this shot, that all the elements worked out. Its not a shot that requires much physical exertion or technical expertise. Just when I thought Yosemite couldn't get any better. The Yosemite Firefall: It occurs when the angle of the sun sets and perfectly illuminates the waterfall, making it look like a river of fire. Witnessed this phenomenon a few days ago and I'm still in awe. #firefall #yosemite
