State Department urges travelers in Europe to be vigilant

WASHINGTON – The State Department issued an advisory with tips for traveling across Europe, a move that follows the Brussels bombings at the city's nearby airport and a subway station Tuesday.

“Terrorist groups continue to plan near-term attacks throughout Europe, targeting sporting events, tourist sites, restaurants and transportation,” the department said. “U.S. citizens should exercise vigilance when in public places or using mass transportation.”

The warning came the same day as bombers killed at least 31 people and injured more than 200 at Brussels Airport and Maelbeek subway station. The Islamic State claimed credit for the attacks.

The advisory, which remains in effect until June 20, also suggests:

• Monitoring local media about travel plans.

• Preparing for additional security screening and unexpected disruptions.

• Registering in Smart Traveler Enrollment Program, to alert the local embassy or consulate about their plans.
