Columbus Day: What's open and closed

This federal holiday causes some places to be closed to observe the day.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The day that commemorates the arrival of Christopher Columbus to North America is celebrated the second Monday in October, this year it falls on Oct. 14.

Columbus Day was first recognized as a U.S. federal holiday in 1937. While several states are ceasing the practice of celebrating this holiday, California still has the day on the calendar.

Here’s a look at what is closed and open:

OPEN:

  • Many public libraries
  • Bus services on a regular schedule. Click here for SacRT bus schedules.
  • California State Capitol Museum
  • San Juan Unified and Elk Grove Unified Schools
  • Yolo and El Dorado County offices
  • Citrus Heights, Folsom, Elk Grove, Sacramento, Rancho Cordova, West Sacramento, Woodland, Stockton and Modesto city offices

CLOSED:

  • Post Offices
  • Federal Offices
  • Placer and Sacramento County offices
  • Roseville City Offices
  • Sacramento public libraries
  • Most banks
