New Stanislaus County Sheriff takes Oath of Office

Jeff Dirkse will be sworn into office Monday afternoon, taking over for outgoing Sheriff Adam Christianson.

Update:

Stanislaus County Sheriff-elect Jeff Dirkse was sworn into office on January 7 at 4 p.m.

Original story:

The Stanislaus County Board of Supervisors will host a Swearing-In Ceremony for him and other county elected officials in the Chambers of the City-County Administration Building in Modesto.

Dirkse is taking over for outgoing Sheriff Adam Christianson who has been held the role since 2006.

While in his last two weeks in office, Christianson was known for leading the investigation of the death of Newman Police Cpl. Ronil Singh and blaming his death on California sanctuary laws.

Prior to that, Christianson spoke with ABC10 about his thoughts on dealing with six "'line of duty" deaths in six years after the death of Deputy Tony Hinostroza.

"You have to pick yourself up and dust yourself off and get back in the fight," said Christianson. "Because while all of this is going on, what we do doesn't come to a stop."

According to the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Office website, Dirkse was born in Southern California and raised in Denair. He has long-standing ties to Stanislaus County after graduating from Turlock High School in 1990. He went on to attend the United States Military Academy at West Point in New York and later served in the U.S. Army as an Infantry Platoon Leader, Ranger Platoon Leader, Infantry Company Commander and most recently was a Watch Officer at Special Operations Command, Europe.

Dirkse has been with the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department since 2007, serving in various roles such as patrol, a detective in STING and rural crime. He earned a promotion to Sergeant in 2013, another promotion to Lieutenant in 2015, and was appointed as the Chief of Patterson Police Services.
