Podcast to feature 'Speed Freak Killers' reign of terror

True Crime Chronicles, a weekly true crime podcast, to feature the Speed Freak Killers' decade-long, drug-fueled rampage in San Joaquin County.

SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY, Calif. — They were dubbed the "Speed Freak Killers" and they terrorized Northern California for more than a decade through the 1980s and 90s.

Wesley Shermantine and Loren Herzog eventually cracked and turned on each other in 1999. But it would be too late for their dozens of victims.

True Crime Chronicles, a weekly true crime podcast, is featuring their decade-long, drug-fueled rampage in its newest episode.

Hosts Will Johnson and Jessica Noll spoke to former ABC10 reporter Tim Daly about his coverage over the years and how it still haunts him to this day.

"I think what may be most shocking is how brazen they were and the fact they were sort of getting away with it for a while," Daly said.

This True Crime Chronicles episode features the stories of two victims, Chevy Wheeler and Cyndi Vanderheiden, and how their disappearances would take a toll on their families and the farming and ranch community in San Joaquin County, Calif. Justice would finally be served, but not without a special request from one of the killers.

True Crime Chronicles is a weekly true crime podcast from VAULT Studios and TEGNA, hosted by Will Johnson and Jessica Noll, that takes a look at a new case each week. They take a fresh look and deep dive into a case that one of our TEGNA stations has covered and bring a new perspective, updates and interviews with family, police, the accused and the reporter who covered the story.
