Adam Schiff wins California US Senate seat: AP Race Call

The race was largely overlooked in a year when control of the Senate will turn on a handful of competitive races.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Update: 8 p.m.

Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff has won the California U.S. Senate seat long held by the late Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein.

The Los Angeles-area congressman defeated Republican former baseball star Steve Garvey after a low-key campaign.

Control of the Senate is in play this year. But Democrats were favored to easily hold this seat in liberal-leaning California, where a Republican hasn’t won a Senate race since 1988. Still, the contest represented a turning point in California politics, which was long dominated by Feinstein, former U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer and other veteran Democrats. Feinstein died last year at 90.

Original Story:

The late Dianne Feinstein's U.S. Senate seat is up for grabs in the November 2024 election. Congressman Adam Schiff and former pro baseball player Steve Garvey are each hoping to get your vote.

Adam Schiff is a Bay Area native and a Stanford and Harvard law school graduate, former federal prosecutor, California state senator and congressman of more than 20 years.

Republican candidate Steve Garvey, originally from Florida, attended Michigan State University. The professional baseball star played for the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres for nearly two decades, and has since become a motivational speaker, businessman and philanthropist, calling California home for more than 50 years.

Voters will see Steve Garvey and Adam Schiff's name in two races on their ballot — one for a partial Senate term to finish out Dianne Feinstein's term, and a full Senate term which lasts six years in Washington, D.C.

When do we find out who won the election?

Voters will start to see results not long after 8 p.m., but keep in mind, these aren't the final results. Every number seen on election night are unofficial results.

While some elections might be called on election night, that's generally a projection from media outlets or experts. Governments don't call elections. Mail-in ballots, provisional ballots, ballots from registered voters in the military deployed over seas and more all get counted for the final result.

The last day for counties to certify results is Dec. 5. The Secretary of State will then have until Dec. 7 to certify the vote, with the Statement of Vote  certified on Dec. 13.
