Sacramento school district bond initiative: Early results show Measure H passes

Election results are currently showing that voters want the Sacramento City Unified School District to sell bonds to improve schools' facilities.

SACRAMENTO, Calif — Early election results indicate Sacramento-area voters as of 10 p.m. decided to pass Measure H.

The next round of results is expected to come on Thursday.

This measure allows Sacramento City Unified School District to sell bonds up to $750 million to update classrooms, labs, libraries and other learning technology classrooms. SCUSD put the ballot measure forward.

Some of the facilities and programs expected to be updated or created with the bond money include, but aren't limited to:

  • Classrooms
  • Science and Engineering Labs
  • Gardens
  • Fine arts performing arts spaces
  • Technology equipment
  • Virtual classrooms
  • Security systems
  • Stadiums
  • Gymnasia
  • Purchasing real property
  • Plumbing, HVAC systems, and other maintenance projects

The passage of this measure qualified the school district for $80 million in matching funds from the state.

The money that would pay the bonds back would come from a tax rate added to property taxes. The tax rate could be $0.05 for every $100 assessed on a property. So if a property is determined to be worth $100,000, the landowner would pay $50 with their property taxes.

The tax rate could change based on the number of bonds sold, interest rate, and the value assessed on the property.

If the district sells all of the bonds, the school district would need to pay back $1.225 billion to people and entities who purchased the bonds. The last year SCUSD estimates the tax would be collected is expected to be 2055.

California has the potential to make or break the race for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination because the state is the biggest when it comes to the number of delegates. The state has 415 delegates to the Democratic National Convention, representing about 10 percent of the total votes on the convention floor.

Superdelegates will not be able to vote on the first ballot at the DNC this year, thanks to rule changes made after the 2016 race.
