MOUNTAIN HOUSE, Calif. — The effort to make the community of Mountain House into a city is off to a fast start after early returns show a super majority support the idea.
The San Joaquin County election results show more than 90% support Measure D.
The community’s population has grown over the past few decades to close to 30,000.
“I want Mountain House to be a city,” said Terence Tanjong, a Mountain House resident. “It has been a long (time) coming.”
Residents favoring cityhood say they are hoping more resources will come, so they will not have to travel as much.
“Instead of going to Tracy or Livermore, we can have some development here in Mountain House, which will be helpful for us,” said Monica Kothamasu, a Mountain House resident.
Those against the measure say the community is growing too much, too fast.
The San Joaquin County Elections officials could not tell ABC10 how many ballots remain because not all mail-in ballots have been received as mail service might delay its delivery.
“There was no perfect time, but I think we are ready,” Dr. Andy Su tells ABC10 when asked why Mountain House decided to pursue cityhood in 2024.
Dr. Su has lived in Mountain House for the past 20 years and is running to be its mayor.
In the early returns, Su leads the race with 62% of the vote. But he is not celebrating until the race has been called.
If the results stay the way they are, Su will be Mountain House’s first Mayor and Mountain House will officially become a city on July 1.
