PLACER COUNTY, Calif. — Election night is finally here for Placer County. Among the races are contests that could shape who represents Districts 3 and 5 on the Placer County Board of Supervisors along with several city council seats.
The first wave of results will come in around 8 p.m. on election night. These will be the counted Vote by Mail ballots that are processed before Election Day.
Around 10 p.m., the results from the votes cast during the voting period at the in-person vote centers will be released in the first update. Updates will come out about every two hours until 100% of the vote centers have reported results.
The county elections office will then release the final update for the evening with the semifinal election results. In previous elections, the final update has come out as early as 11 p.m. or as late as 3 a.m.
By the end of every Tuesday and Friday during the canvass, the county will post updated voted ballot totals on its website. Updates will get spread out further after election night until the vote is certified.
The official canvass must be completed 30 days after the election and the Placer County Registrar of Voters will certify the results.

When do we find out who won the election?
Voters will start to see results not long after 8 p.m., but keep in mind, these aren't the final results. Every number seen on election night are unofficial results.
While some elections might be called on election night, that's generally a projection from media outlets or experts. Governments don't call elections. Mail-in ballots, provisional ballots, ballots from registered voters in the military deployed overseas and more all get counted for the final result.
The last day for counties to certify results is Dec. 5. The Secretary of State will then have until Dec. 7 to certify the vote, with the Statement of Vote certified on Dec. 13.
