Elections 2020: Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg reelected for second term | Update

Voters in Sacramento are casting ballots to decide quite a few big local races, including Mayor Darrell Steinberg's reelection, and close races in Districts 4 and 8.

This page will be updated with the latest in local and state election results. Be sure to refresh for updates.

UPDATE 10:30 a.m.

Less than 600 votes currently separate Katie Valenzuela and incumbent Steve Hansen for the District 4 seat with the Sacramento City Council. As of Wednesday morning, just under 7,500 votes have been count. The seat covers Midtown and the Land Park area.

UPDATE 8 a.m.

With just over 20 percent of registered voters heading out to the polls Tuesday, and 100% of precincts reporting, Sacramento County's elections have finally calmed down.

Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg overwhelming won re-election for a second term with over 70% of voters selecting the incumbent. Four Sacramento City Council seats were also up for grabs.

The next official update from the Sacramento County Elections Office will come at 4 p.m. Friday, March 6.

UPDATE: 11:10 p.m.

Sacramento County poll workers will be burning the midnight oil counting the hundreds of thousands of votes cast by mail an in person. Polling officials will have to roll out results for two more reports — midnight and 2 a.m.

Vans are still dropping of bags of ballots from the 84 voting centers across the county. Workers got a 10-day head start tabulating those early mail-in and drop-off ballots, which helped project Sen. Bernie Sanders healthy lead in the Democratic presidential primary election.

But there are still many more ballots to get processed, and it will be a much longer process to get that finalized count. There are still three days for the county's elections officer to receive mail-in ballots, and officially 28 days to count each and every single vote.

The county saw record numbers this primary, with 818,812 registering to vote. It's still unclear how many of those voters showed up to the polls.

UPDATE: 9:05 p.m.

In what is probably the most expected outcome of Sacramento's election night, Mayor Darrell Steinberg is leading his reelection bid by a large margin, over local token candidates, Mac Arteaga and Jrmar Jefferson.

Steinberg has so far received 73.6% of the votes Tuesday. If he wins, he's expected to continue his mayoral tenure focusing again on the city's homeless and housing crises.

The next round of results are expected to come in around 10 p.m.

In a local surprise, Katie Valenzuela is leading incumbent Steve Hansen in close race for District 4, which encompasses midtown, downtown and Land Park.

Valenzuela has 51% of the votes, while incumbent Hansen sits at 48%.

Another battle for a city council seat has Sacramento City Unified School Board member Mai Vang leading Pastor Les Simmons.

Elsewhere in Sacramento, incumbent city councilmembers Eric Guerra and Allen Warren are leading their races after early polling results. Allen is leading Sean Loloee and Ramona Landeros for the District 2 seat, while Guerra is leading his District 6 seat by a large margin.

UPDATE 8:05 p.m.

It's 8 p.m. in California which means two things: (1) polls are closing across the state, and (2) the Associated Press is officially calling Sen. Bernie Sanders the winner of California's Democratic primary election.

How many delegates he takes after all the votes are tallied is still yet to be determined.

UPDATE 7:00 p.m.

Hundreds of voters flocked to California State University, Sacramento on Tuesday to cast their votes this Super Tuesday, causing an approximate hour-long wait time.

Sacramento voters are hoping have a vote that matters more this year, joining 13 other states on Super Tuesday. But the state's elections got off to a rocky start after the Secretary of State's Office website shut down, and local offices struggled to connect to voter data, forcing them to print ballots manually.

Both issues were fixed relatively fast, though. Regardless of wait times, however, all polls are open until 8 p.m.

Meanwhile, Sacramentans are casting ballots to decide quite a few big local races. Mayor Darrell Steinberg is facing some opposition in his reelection, taking on two local token candidates, Mac Arteaga and Jrmar Jefferson.
