PLACER COUNTY, Calif. — As the primary election approaches, this weekend's storm has caused issues for some voters in counties that saw a lot of snow. Areas most impacted were El Dorado, Nevada, and Placer counties.
Bill O'Neill, Registrar of Voters for El Dorado County, said the storm even caused issues for some employees.
"They were digging their cars out, spending hours digging out, so that they could get to the vote centers in time," he said.
Some voting centers in Nevada County had to close due to the storm.
"On Saturday, our vote center over at the TahoeTruckee Unified School District had to close a half hour early. And then conditions on Sunday got so gnarly that we had to close both those vote centers, not only at the unified school district, but also at Turkey Town Hall," said Natalie Adona, Registrar of Voters, in Nevada County.
Some officials believe voter turnout has been impacted because of the storm. In Placer County, turnout is currently at 20%. In El Dorado County, it's at 22%. While Nevada County officials don't have exact numbers just yet, Adona suspects the weather has played a part in people voting.
"Logic tells us that if you're snowed in, you probably can't get out to vote. So I would assume that there has been some impact," she said.
If people are having issues getting into a voting center or accessing their ballots, county officials urge them to contact the county so they can figure out a way to make sure their ballots are counted.
Voting center locations and times can be found on websites for El Dorado, Placer, and Nevada counties.
