California leaders react to Harris, Trump debate

Governor Gavin Newsom says Harris "was batman tonight." But state Republicans said she refused to take accountability for her record.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris clashed on the debate stage for what could be the first and final time.

The debate showcased their different visions for the country on abortion, immigration and American democracy.

At the end of the debate, people on both the left and right of the political spectrum claimed victory.

Michael Whatley, Chairperson of the Republican National Committee, said Trump laid out a plan to restore the border and rebuild the economy. He said Harris didn't give a single real answer.

It was echoed by California Republicans, who said Harris didn't stand by her record.

"What Americans witnessed this evening was a failed California Democrat who refused to take accountability for her disastrous record. Kamala Harris deserves credit for an open southern border that inspired millions of illegal crossings, Bidenflation that leaves too many living paycheck to paycheck, a war on American energy that drives up costs for consumers and incompetent foreign policy that leaves our nation less safe on the global stage," said California GOP Chairwoman Jessica Millan Patterson.

However, on the other side, California Governor Gavin Newsom raved that Kamala Harris "was Batman' during the debate.

"If this was a prize fight, they would have called it in the second round," Newsom told ABC.

Newsom said Trump offered no compelling vision for the future and didn't talk about the voters, focusing instead of a "grievance narrative."

"I think everyone realized, we're exhausted by that. We're exhausted by the divisiveness. We're exhausted by his grievances. He's got to grow up, grow out of them. But he should do that on his own and not do that on our time," Newsom said.
