Former Stockton mayor files to run for lieutenant governor in 2026

Tubbs became the Stockton's first Black mayor and one of the youngest mayors of a big city in the United States after being elected in 2016.

STOCKTON, Calif. — Former Stockton Mayor Michael Tubbs has filed to run for the office of California lieutenant governor in 2026, according to a statement of organization filed Sunday.

Tubbs became the city’s first Black mayor and one of the youngest mayors of a big city in the United States after being elected in 2016. He received national attention when he launched a universal basic income experiment giving a small group of lower-income residents $500 a month for two years.

Tubbs sought re-election in 2020 but lost to Kevin Lincoln, who is currently serving as mayor and is seeking to unseat Democrat Josh Harder in U.S. House District 9.
