SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Governor Gavin Newsom closed the ceremonial roll call for the Democratic National Convention, delivering California's delegate votes for Vice President Kamala Harris.
"I saw that star — fighting for criminal justice, racial justice, economic justice, social justice — I saw that star getting even brighter," Newsom said.
California had the largest group of delegates, with nearly 500 at the convention.
Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg, a longtime friend and colleague of Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris, was at the United Center in Chicago for the convention as well.
"There's a special source of pride, because I had the privilege of working with her when I led the Senate and she was the Attorney General and even years before. And I saw in her then someone with a unique talent," Steinberg said.
West Sacramento Mayor Martha Guerrero is a first-time delegate. She said, after the DNC, getting out the vote will be key for the November election, and that she is eager to canvas for Harris.
"As a woman, she can do the job. She's decisive; she takes care of people. That's what we all need to see, what her history is and that bright side of her," Guerrero said.
Delegates will busy for the week as the convention continues. Many of them are attending various meetings and councils ahead of the evening speeches.
"The non-stop go, go, go and in between all of that, the different workshops and the things we can bring back to Sacramento," said Porsche Middleton, a Citrus Heights City councilmember and delegate.
Middleton describe the convention as an empowering experience.
"Being the first Black woman elected to Citrus Heights City Council, it's tremendous to see someone else in a higher office to be president. Kamala is going to be great, and it makes me realize that we truly, in this country, a woman can be anything she wants to be," Middleton said.
Harris' running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, will address the DNC Wednesday to formally accept the party's vice presidential nomination.
Vice President Harris will take the stage Thursday to accept the party's presidential nomination.
