SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Former President Donald Trump will appear on the California presidential primary ballot despite calls for him to be removed.
Secretary of State Shirley N. Weber certified the candidate list Thursday night. This comes just a week after California Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis called for Weber to look for legal options to remove Trump altogether from the state's 2024 presidential primary ballot.
This request followed Colorado and Maine, among other states, ruling to boot Trump from the ballot under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment. The decision, made earlier this month by the Colorado Supreme Court, has been halted until the U.S. Supreme Court decides whether Trump is barred by the Civil War-era provision, which prohibits those who “engaged in insurrection” from holding office.
Republicans are working to fight these rulings to remove Trump off ballots.
The primary ballot, held March 5, 2024, will be mailed to voters beginning Feb. 5. Those registered with a party will have receive a ballot with presidential candidates and other elected officials. Find the entire list HERE.
Voters registered with no party or no party preference wanting to vote on a presidential candidate must request a ballot with presidential candidates from the American Independent Party, Democratic Party or Libertarian Party. If a voter wants to vote for the Green, Peace and Freedom, or Republican parties' presidential candidates, they must re-register with that specific party
