Multiple arrested after Oakland police officer shot, killed while responding to burglary

Police haven't specified how many people were arrested or identified them yet.

OAKLAND, Calif. — Several people have been arrested after Oakland police officer Tuan Le was shot and killed Friday during a burglary call.

The Oakland Police Department made the announcement Tuesday via a Facebook post but did not specify how many people were arrested or their identities.

“Our officers continue to work tirelessly to bring justice to the Le family. We are all devastated by this senseless act of violence, and our hearts continue to mourn his passing,” wrote the department.

The investigation remains ongoing. KGO in San Francisco reports a private memorial is scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 9.

CASE HISTORY

Oakland police were called to the 400 block of Embarcadero for a reported burglary around 1 a.m. Friday.

Upon arrival officers found evidence of a burglary but the people responsible weren’t at the scene.

Then, another burglary was reported around 4:30 a.m. and this time officers saw people leaving the business. The burglars shot at plain-clothed officers and one officer, later identified as Tuan Le, was hit.

Le died from his injuries at the hospital before 9 a.m.

The Oakland Police Department says Le was originally born in Saigon, Vietnam, before moving to Oakland and being naturalized Sept. 11, 2001. He graduated from the police academy in February 2020.
