Stanford University student hit by driver in hate crime, deputies say

Investigators say the suspect yelled expletives at the victim before hitting him with his SUV.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Deputies in Santa Clara County are looking for a man wanted in connection with a hate crime at Stanford University.

According to the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office, it happened around 2 p.m. Friday Nov. 3 at the intersection of Campus Drive and Ayrshire Farm Lane on campus.

The victim, a student of Syrian descent, was crossing the street when the suspect yelled an expletive directed at him and other people of his nationality before hitting him with a vehicle.

The student had non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment. Deputies say the student was wearing a shirt that said ‘Damascus’ in Arabic at the time of the crime.

The suspect was described as a man in his mid-20s with a gray shirt and prescription glasses. He was driving a black Toyota SUV with a tire mounted on the back. It should have front passenger side bumper damage from the collision.
