SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Miller Greenfield is in hot pursuit of his dream of becoming a police officer someday.
"You want to show them your badge? That just came today. He's now an honorary deputy," said his mom, Jessica, in Miller's hospital room at Kaiser Permanente Roseville Medical Center.
Miller is 11-years-old. He's battling a rare neuro-degenerative disease, but he's not letting it define his dream.
"Miller has dystonia deafness syndrome. How many surgeries have you had? Twelve surgeries, so he's super brave," Jessica asked Miller.
Miller was diagnosed when he was four and he's been in love with law enforcement during his entire journey.
"I love Sac PD. I love Sac PD. That's what you said. Who else has visited you here?" Jessica said.
Miller is quite popular at the hospital in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Recently, he had some visits that have made his day. This week, Roseville Police and Rocklin Police stopped by and took Miller in their trucks, cars and let him turn on the siren.
"I guess it's just been unexpected support system because we are well supported, but having an additional group of people who genuinely enjoy coming and spending time with Miller, and he senses that, and they want to be here with Miller. It's important for him and it's important for his day-to-day existence. They hear Miller is here. He has an open guest list. They come and spend time with him, and for Miller, being surrounded by the people he admires is really important," Jessica said.
Miller has it all including a uniform, a badge, experience in a helicopter, a patrol car and with the SWAT team, but now, he just has to graduate the police academy.
"He has to salute during the National Anthem. He has to hold his hand up to be sworn in. He's working on standing and those are things that his therapists and doctors recognize. So, if we are looking for things that matter to Miller, the most important thing to him right now is going on June 20 and experiencing graduation. And becoming an official Sacramento Police Department officer," Jessica said.
He can't wait for that moment when his dream will come true with some help from his brothers in blue.
"Being a police officer is exactly what Miller would do in the world, so this opportunity for him to participate is really important," she added.
