Sacramento Police make over 250 DUI arrests in last year

One officer is responsible for making 102 of those arrests.

SACRAMENTO, Calif — Rhonda Campbell said her sister, Irene, was just 12-years-old when she was hit and killed by a drunk driver.

"The night my sister died, I'm grateful to God that the officer chose to stay with her and hold her hand while she was dying on the side of the road because she didn't have anybody else," she said.

Now Campbell speaks to DUI offenders through the work she does with Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD).

"I feel like if I can reach one person and my story makes them make a better decision next time, then I've honored my sister completely like I should be doing," she said.

Campbell was shocked to learn the number of DUI arrests the Sacramento Police Department made in 2018. Sac PD officials announced they arrested 278 individuals for driving under the influence in Sacramento last year.

“That's amazing, and scary right,” Campbell said. "I will tell you, the statistics say that a drunk driver will drive 80 times before we catch him once. So if you take those numbers and multiply it by 80, that's how many times we weren't able to get to them."

MADD honored Officer Morlan with the outstanding service award for taking 102 DUI drivers off the streets last year.
