SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Less than a month after holding a one-day strike over labor disagreements with the school district, the Sacramento City Teachers Association [SCTA] announced Tuesday that it would go on strike again at the end of May.
The one-day strike will take place on Wednesday, May 22, three weeks before the last day of school on Thursday, June 13 and a little over a month before the district has to balance its budget or else face being taken over by the state.

Sacramento Unified School District Superintendent Jorge Aguilar said in a press release schools will again be open on May 22.
“SCTA leaders have announced another strike at a time when our district is running out of money, on the brink of insolvency and state takeover,” Aguilar said in the statement. “This strike will once again have a negative impact on our students, particularly those with the greatest needs."
Also in the district's statement, board President Jessie Ryan the two sides should rally together, not continue fighting.
“On May 22nd rather than striking, we should join forces to demand full and fair funding at CTA’s #RedforEd Capitol Action Day.”
On the same day, educators from across the state will gather at the Capitol, asking for more funding for California schools. Sacramento city educators plan to join this rally, after they've held their strike.
