Flooding forces Sloughhouse restaurant to close for winter

Owner Terri Gilliland says the restaurant was closed for at least a week last year due to flooding. On Thursday, the business parking lot flooded for the third year in a row.

SLOUGHHOUSE, Calif. — The owners of the Meadowlands restaurant in rural Sacramento County decided to keep their business closed for the winter, in part, due to expected floods.

Owner Terri Gilliland says the restaurant was closed for at least a week last year due to flooding. On Thursday, the business parking lot flooded for the third year in a row. Other area roads and farms also flooded over.

“It doesn’t look like it’s in the building,” Gilliland said. “We have had some situations where water is fairly close to getting inside.”

The small creek behind the property looked like a river Thursday. Many visit the restaurant on their way to wine country.

“We love this community, it’s a remarkable place,” Gilliland said. “Love the country-esque whole atmosphere of it.”

The owners do not expect any major damages, since the flooding is contained mostly to the parking lot, and the building is several feet off the ground.

Gilliland and her husband plan to open the restaurant back up in the spring.
