Stockton Fire Chief out on bail after arrest for domestic violence

Stockton Fire Chief Erik Newman was arrested Thursday on charges of felony domestic violence. He is out on bail and remains on administrative leave.

STOCKTON, Calif. — Stockton Fire Chief Erik Newman is out on bail following an arrest Thursday over an alleged domestic violence incident, according to officials with the Turlock Police Department.

The 52-year-old was wanted on one felony count of "corporal injury to a spouse or cohabitant," according to the Turlock Police Department. He was booked into the Stanislaus County Jail on $50,000 bail.

The arrest stems from an alleged incident that happened June 14 in the 4600 block of Visions Drive in Turlock, according to Turlock Police. No other details of the alleged incident were released.

A check of the jail website shows he is no longer in custody. The Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Office will decide if there is enough evidence to file charges.

ABC10 has also learned that the City of San Francisco’s Department of Emergency Management (SFDEM) offered Newman a job as deputy director for the Division of Emergency Services.

“We will reserve comment until more information is available,” said a spokesperson for SFDEM.

Newman served as the Stockton Fire Chief for four years. He was set to retire from his role this summer.

ABC10 reached out to Chief Newman for comment, but so far, there has been no response.
