'The community's here for them and we care about them' | Queen Sheba restaurant re-opens after fire

One week after someone was caught on camera lighting the Queen Sheba restaurant on fire and running away, they've reopened to the community.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — It's been exactly one week since a fire was intentionally set to Sacramento's Queen Sheba restaurant by a person caught on camera.

After some quick temporary repairs were made over the weekend, the Ethiopian restaurant was able to re-open on Monday.

"I'm just trying not to get emotional but I'm happy nothing worse happened," Tizeta Boone-Nelson, a regular said.

Luckily, the fire was contained to just the outside of the building, leaving everything inside completely untouched.

"She's got angels and somebody had evil intentions but there's a higher being that's protecting her because it could have been worse, and she had the door that was fire resistant but who knew this would happen?" Boone-Nelson said.

After spending the weekend taking down the burned up awning outside, boarding up holes and throwing on a fresh coat of paint, owner Zion Taddese was able to re-open just one week later.

"So I feel blessed in a way, trying to put me down but God is bringing me up,' Taddese said.

And the community flooded in.

"To me, it's so important that when something happens, the community shows up for each other, whether it's a business or another person. I think that's what really makes a community strong," Fiona Lavelle, a regular said. "We just wanted to come here today to be one of the first to show them the community's here for them and we care about them."

"Sometimes you have to let something go to understand how much you love and appreciate it. And I don't ever need to have that happen again for me to appreciate the Queen of Sheba," Armando Gonzalez, a regular said.

Gonzalez said, before the fire, he came to eat at the restaurant four or five times a week.

"This is not just a place where I come and rely [on] to get my food. Last week, my routine was thrown off obviously but it's more than that. It's a spiritual hub. It's a place where we feel community in a way that we really don't feel nowadays," he said.

Now that Sacramento has their Ethiopian fix of food back, most regulars say they're grateful this restaurant had the chance to have this fresh start so soon.

"It's a special day so we're going to be grateful and we're going to celebrate the new beginning," Boone-Nelson said.

The Sacramento Fire Department released surveillance video on Monday from this fire. In the video, you can see someone walking to the front of the Queen Sheba restaurant, then a few seconds later, you see flames coming from the same spot.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Arson Tip Line at 916-808-8732 or Sacramento Valley Crime Stoppers at 1-800-AACRIME.
