SACRAMENTO, Calif. — As teachers with the Sacramento City Teachers Association [SCTA] prepare to go on strike Thursday, the Sacramento City Unified School District [SCUSD] is reminding parents that all schools will remain open.
"Even though not all district staff may come to work that day, we plan on keeping our schools open this Thursday so that our children have a safe learning environment to go to during the day," said SCUSD Superintendent Jorge Aguilar.
The district told ABC10 it has subs, retired teachers, administrators with teaching credentials, and other emergency replacement teachers ready to be in all the classrooms where a teacher doesn't show up.
SCTA officials say the strike will last one day, with teachers returning to work on April 12.
According to SCUSD officials, the plan is to have as regular of a school day as possible, with meals being served as usual and bus routes running like they normally do.
"There will be instruction, there will be activities," said SCUSD's spokesman, Alex Barrios. "It will be safe to come to school. All of our schools will be open. There will be nutritious meals and we'll move forward with our school day."
Still, a lot of parents are choosing to not send their kids to school.
Beth Campbell wrote on SCUSD's Facebook page, "Thank you for keeping schools open for the kids who have nowhere else to go and who depend on the hot lunch. My kids will be staying home in support of the teachers, but most families do not have that option."
Barrios added that Thursday is a regularly scheduled school day with regular attendance monitoring.
