SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento region is one of the most diverse regions in the country, and the youth in our community reflect that. ABC10 stands with kids in the areas we serve, because a prosperous future starts with them.
That’s why ABC10 teamed up with Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Greater Sacramento Area during the month of June 2024 to launch “Stand With Kids” – a fundraising campaign to support kids in our area and inspire local adults to invest in our youth and the future of the community.
BBBS Sacramento matches local volunteer mentors, or “Bigs,” with kids ages 7-18, the “Littles.” The nonprofit provides resources for the Big to mentor their Little and support them in various ways.
With donations from the community and a grant from the TEGNA Foundation, a giving arm of ABC10's corporate parent, a total of $14,416 was raised for BBBS Sacramento. Donations will help fund training for mentors and activities for Bigs and Littles. Beyond the mentorship aspect, these funds also go toward resources for Littles, their parents and their families.
There is a proven positive impact when kids feel seen and represented by people they look up to outside of their home. Researchers found that after 18 months of Bigs and Littles spending time together, the Littles were 46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs and 52% less likely to skip school, compared to kids not enrolled in BBBS programs.
According to Sacramento County Children’s Coalition, 33% of children in the Sacramento region live in a single-parent household. The resources and programs provided by BBBS Sacramento are intended to assist parents who want extra support for their kids outside of the home.
Thank you for joining ABC10 to Stand With Kids and empower youth in the Sacramento region. While the Stand With Kids effort has concluded, the community can support BBBS Sacramento year-round through donations or volunteering.
