MODESTO, Calif. — The Modesto Nuts 2024 season will be the last the team plays on their current field after the team and city couldn't agree to a long-term lease extension.
The team announced the news Wednesday, saying their season and time at John Thurman Field will end Sept. 30.
City officials and team officials say there was a hard fight to find a way to make an agreement happen, but nothing shook out over the years.
“We’re disappointed we were unable to agree upon an extension,” said Nuts General Manager Veronica Hernandez in a press release. “I know we and the city worked very hard to find common ground and unfortunately were unable to accomplish our goal."
The field was built in 1955 and the Modesto Nuts have been around since 1946 but were originally established as the Modesto Reds. The Modesto Nuts, owned by and affiliates of the Seattle Mariners since 2016, have won 10 championships.
“Every game has more of a memorable moment now moving forward," Hernandez said.
Hernandez said it has been a couple of years the team and the city have been going back and forth in negotiations.
“There are certain requirements that every minor league team needs to fulfill in the sense of operations for player standards," Hernandez said. “There is a lot of things that this stadium needs for both the players side and the fan sides.”
While it has gone through some changes, Modesto City Council Member Chris Ricci wrote in a Facebook post, Major League Baseball was requesting facilities improvement estimated to cost more the $32 million.
It's unclear where the team will move once the season is over. There are still around 30 home games left in the 2024 season at the John Thurman Field. Find tickets and more information HERE.
