CLARKSBURG, Calif. — There's nothing quite like small town high school sports and Delta High School is a great example of that. Nestled in Clarksburg, the community truly rallies around the student athletes.
The Saints volleyball team is in the midst of an incredible turnaround season. And even though they're a small school, they're not just going to let you push them around.
"We're fierce, and we're small," said senior Ayren Rapp. Senior Zoey Velasquez added, "Because we're smaller I feel like we want it more. It's the drive. We want to win because what else is there to talk about here."
And winning is something they've been doing a lot of this year. After winning just 4 matches total last season, the Saints are on pace to triple that win total, in addition to being playoff bound.
"I think our relationship with each other is so much better this year," said senior Madeline Taylor. "For sure the chemistry. We have way better responses. We have way better communication," added Velasquez.
And it also helps when you have a coach who can connect with their athletes.
"I'd like to think of my coaching style as a player's coach," said head coach Blaire Jewell. "I'm not overly disciplined, but we definitely have fun and we do work hard."
Delta High School only has about 200 students, and the community support means everything to them.
"It's just great to see a community come together," said senior Emma Morazzini. "Clarksburg definitely is a hometown community." Cheerleader Viena Estrada added "Everyone just knows each other. It's just so warming to see everyone at all the games. It's always the same supporters. Everyone's just cheering loud and everything."
The Saints are hoping to make a deep run in the playoffs, and they refuse to let anything hold them back.
"We're coming," said Valasquez. "We're in it to win it. We're locked in. That's our mindset. We wanna win. We're gonna win."
Delta High School is having their alumni game on Wednesday October 23rd. It will be a night of fun competition and connections. Donations are welcome.
