SAN FRANCISCO — Former San Francisco Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford is calling it a career after 14 years in the big leagues.
The four-time Gold Glove winner announced his retirement Wednesday afternoon with a lengthy statement on his Instagram account.
"Growing up in the Bay Area and going to games at Candlestick, I always dreamed of playing for the San Francisco Giants," Crawford's post reads. "Being drafted by my hometown team and spending most of my career with them far surpassed any dream I had as a kid. I definitely pretended to win a World Series in my backyard — but winning two? That was beyond my wildest dreams."
Crawford spent most of his career with the Giants, where he played the most games at shortstop in franchise history. After 13 seasons with the team, Crawford spent his final season with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2024.
The Bay Area native established himself as one of the best fielding shortstops since he made his 2011 MLB debut.
He won his four Gold Gloves in 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2021. Gold Gloves, considered one of baseball's most prestigious defensive awards, are given annually to players based on their fielding performances.
Crawford also made three MLB All-Star Game appearances and was vital to the Giants' World Series championship teams in 2012 and 2014. He also won the Silver Slugger at shortstop in 2015. The Silver Slugger Award is given every year to the best offensive player at the position in both the American League and National League.
"It's been an unforgettable journey. Thank you Giants for allowing me to live my dream and be a part of so much throughout my career in San Francisco," Crawford said.
The Giants will reportedly honor Crawford when they host the Texas Rangers at Oracle Park on April 26. Former Giants manager Bruce Bochy will be in the opposing dugout as the Rangers manager.
