Original Story:
It's a big sports day in Sacramento. Aside from the headline of the day being the Sacramento Kings press conference with six-time NBA all-star and Olympic gold medalist DeMar DeRozan, who is now a Sacramento King, the Sacramento Republic FC is gearing up to hit the pitch to make another magical run in the US Open Cup.
The team is hosting the Seattle Sounders FC, and Republic FC knows a thing or two about beating MLS squads in this tournament. It was just two years ago when Republic FC beat three MLS tournaments on the way to making it to the U.S. Open Cup final.
The last time these two teams met each other was six years ago in the U.S. Open Cup, and Republic FC happened to defeat them.
This is the second time Republic FC has appeared in the U.S. Open Cup quarterfinals. The Sounders are a four-time champion, winning the U.S. Open Cup from 2009-2011 and again in 2014, according to U.S. Soccer.
The good news for Republic FC is that at home throughout this tournament they are 20 and two.
Republic FC beat the San Jose Earthquakes 4-3 on May 21 to advance to the quarterfinals.
Kick-off is set for 8 p.m. at Heart Health Park in Sacramento in this Quarter-final matchup. The U.S. Open Cup started with 96 teams in March and is now down to the final eight.
If Republic FC beats the Major League Soccer team out of Seattle, they'll advance to the semifinal rounds set to happen on August 27 or 28. They would play the winner of Los Angeles FC vs. New Mexico United.
