Sacramento State loses to Portland State at home | FINAL

The loss drops the Sacramento State Hornets to 3-6 overall and 1-4 in the Big Sky Conference.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento State Hornets lost 58-38 to the Portland State Vikings in front of the home crowd at Hornet Stadium Saturday night. 

The loss drops the Hornets to 3-6 overall and 1-4 in the Big Sky Conference. The Vikings improve to 2-6 overall and 2-3 against Big Sky opponents. 

Following a 21-17 halftime Hornets lead, they were outscored 41-17 in the second half. Every Vikings possession in the second half resulted in a touchdown.

Sac State quarterback Carson Conklin passed for 314 yards, four touchdowns and an interception. Anderson Grover was the Hornets leading receiver with 134 yards and a touchdown on eight catches. 

The Hornets will look to bounce back on the road against an undefeated Montana State Bobcats squad on Nov. 9. The Bobcats will enter the matchup at 9-0 overall and 5-0 in the Big Sky Conference.

The Sacramento State Hornets will take on the Portland State Vikings on Saturday at 6 p.m. in Sacramento at the Hornet Stadium. 

Sac State is coming off a tough overtime loss against Idaho State; falling short 30-27. 

The Hornets are not ranked after their performance against Eastern Washington. Sac State before the Eastern Washington game was ranked No. 18 in the Stats Perform Top 25 Poll and No. 20 in the AFCA FCS Coaches Poll.

Portland State is unranked. 

Portland State is coming off a rocky game last weekend against Montana Grizzlies, as Montana defeated the Vikings 44-14. The Vikings have had a rough start of the season as they are 1-6 overall.

Sac State is heading into another week of Big Sky Conference play, taking on Portland State who finished 8th in the 2023 season. 

Last week, the Hornets took on Idaho State who finished 9th in the 2023 season. Both teams competed head-to-head the whole game which led to overtime. 

This was the Hornet's second week going into overtime with the opposing team. The Hornets, unfortunately, fell short to the Bengals 30-27 in overtime. 

Sac State running back Elijah Tau-Tolliver rushed for 100 yards and scored a touchdown in the first two quarters. The Hornets had a lot of opportunities in the final moments of the game, but stumbled with turnovers and missed field goals. 

Sac State could have its hands full with Portland State defensive backs Isaiah Green, who led the Vikings last week with 10 tackles, and Michael Montgomery, who had eight tackles.
