LINCOLN, Calif. — In just their third year in existence, the Twelve Bridges High School track and field team have not just arrived but are also putting the league on notice.
"This is the best season we've all had, and we just want to go out with a big bang," said senior sprinter Anthony Gallagher.
The Twelve Bridges track team is experiencing a whole new level of success this season.
Their work ethic has turned them into a successful program this year. Both the boys and girls 4X100 relay teams are ranked in the top 10 in the Sac-Joaquin section. Not to mention, they're undefeated in the Pioneer Valley League heading into the league championship meet.
Coach Josh Winston and Coach Kent might just be the secret to their success this year.
"They've helped a lot with my form," said Aly Winston, junior sprinter.
The same goes for Gallagher.
"My freshman and sophomore year, I wasn't the best," said Gallagher. "Coach Winston came here this year, and he taught me everything I know."
Coach Winston is in his second year as the sprints coach, and from the moment he stepped in the role, he knew he wanted to implement a winning culture.
"Initially, we were the bright new shining school, and we wanted to build a legacy here," said Coach Winston. "And now, we're building that legacy. That's what's most important. They're laying the foundation for the classes coming in next year and the following year."
One of the shining stars on the team is Winston's daughter, Aly, who happens to be one the fastest sprinters in the state. And the scary thing is that the junior sprinter is continuously improving and hungry for more.
"It's crazy how far I've come," said Aly. "I got to stay focused and keep training. I've been going to the gym a lot more than the previous years."
"She's setting the bar really high," added Coach Winston. "This doesn't happen without effort. She works her tail off 11 months out of the year to get the results she does."
More than anything Aly wants to inspire the next generation of sprinters.
"I know track can be a tricky sport," said Aly. "But stay consistent with your work. Don't give up. You might be in a rough spot right now, but you'll get through it."
The league championship meet took place on Thursday evening, and Twelve Bridges won the PVL title in boys and girls.
