MARYSVILLE, Calif. — There's something special brewing on the campus of Yuba College in Marysville. There's a new head football coach, new roster of players, new culture and a team determined to win.
Spend just one second around the Yuba College football team and you can't help but notice there's something special about the group.
"The culture, it's just motivation," said Jariah McBath, freshman. "Everyone is motivational. It will lift you up. The coaches, it's all love. And we just grind out here, every day." "The culture, it just seems like I think that everyone is hungry," said freshman Chase Clary. "Especially with the program last year, we just want to go out there, get some wins and change the program and turn it around a little bit."
This is a program that hasn't been used to winning lately. In fact, they have won just one game over the last three seasons combined. But, they have a feeling that may change, because there's a new sheriff in town.
"Coach Tim is doing a great job," said sophomore Bruno Anyanw. "In the few amount of days he's had, he's actually brought guys here and the team is still building. The season is actually not looking too bad for us."
Coach Tim Mulvehill recently took over the football program, and he's wasted no time implementing a new culture.
"It's important for me to keep positivity, good morale and keep these guys emotionally, mentally, physically and spiritually engaged," Mulvehill said. "Not only on the football field but off the football field, you got to come in here with a full heart and passion and determination with that mindset of winning."
And it's safe to say, his players have already bought in.
"I think he's a tough, gritty coach and he really cares about his guys," said freshman Aiden Keiper. "He used to give me rides to practice when I couldn't make it out here. Just having someone believe in me like that, it makes me really want to play."
"In this short amount of time, he's been very motivational," McBath said. "He's made us better everyday, and he's just a great coach."
"This year, I really like how it's going," said sophomore Benjamin Munoz. "There's a lot more coaches, a lot more structure."
With a new culture, there also comes a lot of swag.
"Get your popcorn ready," said freshman Markel Robinson. "That's all I can say. Yuba football. Get your popcorn ready."
