First state-approved kids MMA fights in U.S. held in Sacramento

Sacramento made history when it became the first city ever to host a kids mixed martial arts (pankration) tournament sanctioned by the State of California
Kids MMA, or youth pankration, tournament was held at the Four Points by Sheraton in Natomas on Saturday, Oct. 18, 2014.

Sacramento made history in October when it became the first city in the country to host a state sanctioned kids mixed martial arts (MMA) tournament.

The tournament was held at the Four Points by Sheraton in Natomas. The Bred4Battle event featured 12 kids in six youth pankration bouts between the ages 7 and 16 years old. Youth pankration is a form of mixed martial arts that does not allow punches or strikes to the head.

In September, after a year of vetting and studying the sport, the California State Athletic Commission gave its approval to allow children as young as 7 years old to enter the cage and compete in MMA events.

The United States Fight League oversees and governs the sport.
