Oakland A's to lay off staff ahead of move to Sutter Health Park

The A’s wouldn’t release the specific number of layoffs to occur, but a source tells ABC10 50% of non-baseball staff will be laid off.

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Oakland A’s tell ABC10 they’re laying some staff off ahead of their move to West Sacramento to play at Sutter Health Park from the 2025 to 2028 season.

The A’s wouldn’t release the specific number of layoffs to occur, but a source tells ABC10 50% of non-baseball staff will be laid off. The A’s did confirm the layoffs will happen after the current season.

“We have had to make the difficult decision to restructure our workforce due to our relocation to Sacramento next year. This was not an easy decision,” the A’s told ABC10 in a statement. “We want to acknowledge the significant contributions of each employee affected by our staffing adjustments. Their dedication and hard work have been invaluable to our organization, and we are grateful for all they have done.”

This is just the latest to come out about the 123 year old Oakland A's organization with such a loyal fan base.

Former A’s pitcher Trevor May spoke to ABC10 in April after the announcement of moving to West Sacramento was announced. He said he feared moving would lead to layoffs.

“A lot of people that worked at the coliseum and stuff are not going to have their jobs anymore and people that have been there for decades, like half the people there have worked there for decades it’s a very close knit, loyal place so it’s sad they now have to change what they were doing,” he said. “Hopefully they are able to land on their feet because they had something consistent that’s not going to be consistent.”

A’s president Dave Kaval spoke exclusively to ABC10 in April and confirmed layoffs then. He said there was going to be a “reduction in force” but the team was working alongside the River Cats and the Sacramento Kings to “make sure (staff who have been here a long time) have a spot here in Sacramento, maybe Las Vegas.”

The A’s say they’re “providing severance packages, assistance, and resources to help (staff) through this transition.”
