CALIFORNIA, USA — At least 8,000 San Francisco 49ers fans will soon have a special team license plate issued by the California DMV.
The 49ers announced their campaign launched in May 2022, in partnership with the California Natural Resources Agency (CNRA), to print special license plates with the tagline “Faithful to State Parks” was successful on April 15.
The team needed to obtain 7,500 pre-orders by May 2 for the plates to be printed; the CNRA has received over 8,000 orders as of Wednesday, according to the California agency.
ABC10 reported in February ahead of Super Bowl LVIII the 49ers had 4,325 preorders to go. The 49ers lost to the Kansas City Chiefs 25-22 in the big game featuring Brock Purdy as the Bay Area team’s quarterback.
Purdy was the final pick in the 2022 NFL draft, earning him the nickname Mr. Irrelevant. The 49ers will pick 31st in the 2024 NFL draft Thursday due to last season’s success, which may have contributed to the team’s triumphant license plate campaign.
Proceeds from the 49ers plates will benefit the CNRA and its efforts to expand access to outdoor recreational spaces in California, the team said.
The upfront cost of a regular plate is $50, plus a $3 nonrefundable processing fee, the DMV said. It would cost $40 to renew annually.
The upfront cost of a personalized plate is $103, plus a $3 nonrefundable processing fee, the DMV said. It would cost $83 to renew annually.
The plate can be ordered at 49ersplates.com until May 2, the DMV said. Californians can purchase the plate later once it is added to the Special Interest License Plate list on the DMV website.
“For an application to be valid, the plate must be assigned to a vehicle currently registered with the California DMV,” the DMV said in a statement to ABC10. “Once the DMV validates the required 7,500 pre-paid plate applications, it generally takes 10 to 12 months to implement programming for the new plates.”
