SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - The San Jose Sharks have signed star defenseman Brent Burns to an eight-year contract extension.
The deal announced Tuesday keeps Burns off the free-agent market next summer and with the Sharks for the long term.
Burns was a finalist for the Norris Trophy last season as the NHL's top defenseman when he helped lead San Jose to its first appearance in the Stanley Cup Final. He led all defenseman with 27 goals and also 48 assists. General manager Doug Wilson called Burns one of the most dynamic players in the league.
Burns has seven goals and nine assists this season for the Sharks.
