Loomis water polo star Alex Obert scores a goal in Team USA's win over Romania

Team USA Water Polo is now 1-1 in the preliminary round. Loomis native Alex Obert scored a goal today.

PARIS, France — There are 131 Californian athletes who qualified for and are in Paris for the 2024 Olympic Games. America's Olympic team, Team USA, includes 10 athletes from the Greater Sacramento region.

Here’s a look at how water polo star Alex Obert from Loomis is doing with the USA Water Polo team:

  • July 28 vs. Italy - USA lost 12-8. Alex Obert played for more than 9 minutes. He didn't take any shots.
  • July 30 vs. Romania - USA won 14-8. Alex Obert scored the fourth goal to tie the match 2-2 at 5:37. He played more than 10 minutes.

Olympic water polo matches are four eight-minute quarters.

Team USA will face off against Greece on Thursday, August 1 at 10:30 a.m. Paris time, 1:30 a.m. PST time. To move on to the quarterfinals, Team USA needs to finish in the top four in Group A, which includes Italy, Croatia, Greece, Montenegro and Romania. Italy is the only team who has won both matches so far.

Obert, 32, is competing in Water Polo during the 2024 Olympics. This is Obert's third Olympic games after the team placed 6th in 2020 and 10th in 2016.

The Loomis-raised Olympian graduated from the University of the Pacific after transferring from Sierra College. He originally started playing water polo at Del Oro High School to stay in shape for basketball season, according to his Olympic bio

He was a three-time All-American water polo player at the University of the Pacific and led the team to the 2013 NCAA Championship game, according to USA Water Polo.
